Movie Reviews: Safety Not Guaranteed
The movie is about a guy who writes a classified ad that reads, "*WANTED* Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before." A magazine writer (Jake M. Johnson) brings up the idea to his boss to check this guy out and write a story about it. He brings two interns (Aubrey Plaza and Karan Soni) along with him to help him with the story. Aubrey Plaza's character, Darius, ends up being the one answering the ad.

The guy who wrote the ad, Kenneth, is played by Mark Duplass. When I first saw the guy, I had doubts as to whether he would be a good fit for the role. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the chemistry was between him and Aubrey Plaza.

There's also a side plot where Jake Johnson's character, Jeff, reveals that he's doing the story so that he can meet up with an old high school fling that lives in the same town as where they need to go to investigate their story.

The other intern that comes along, Arnau, is only a side character but I thought Karan Soni did a good job with him.

I really liked the movie. It's a geeky romantic comedy that is well written and heartfelt. I think I would have preferred a slightly different ending but it's an acceptable ending.

I give this movie a 4/5 stars.

**************** SPOILER ALERT ****************

The only thing that I felt that was strange in the movie was that Kenneth was smart enough to build a time machine.

I would have preferred an ending where we didn't know whether his time machine actually worked. I wanted him to choose between going back to the past and staying with Darius. I wanted to see Kenneth step off the time machine and choose to stay with Darius. And as they kissed, there would be a bright light in the background, leaving us unsure as to whether the time machine actually worked. But of course, the answer wouldn't matter because that isn't what the story is about.
