Transformers Reviews: MP-22 Masterpiece Ultra Magnus

Finally, we have an Ultra Magnus that's not just a white repaint of Optimus Prime! Although the cab section of the truck looks almost exactly like the MP-10 Optimus Prime, it does not transform into a white Optimus Prime. Initially, I was disappointed because I feel like a transforming cab section would add additional playability but now that I have it and see the transformation, I'm glad that the cab section doesn't transform into a separate robot because it would have resulted in a full robot mode that would not have looked as good.

Like it or hate it, there has been a lot of attention to detail to make this figure cartoon accurate. A lot of fans, including myself, did not realize that the cartoon version of Ultra Magnus had a red bumper. When I saw that he had a greyish lavender coloured gun, I was wondering why that decision was made. Turns out that was the colour of his gun in the cartoon! I always thought Ultra Magnus had a white gun, like with his G1 toy.

Overall, I really like the robot mode. It's a little bit bulkier looking than I would like but it's not bad. My favourite thing is the chest. It's accurate looking to Transformers: The Movie. I like the red tinted windows, which is more reminiscent of the movie rather than the TV show and the Matrix chamber, which is highly detailed.

The head sculpt looks pretty nice. The only thing I would complain about is that his eyes could be a little bit bigger. In the cartoon, he looked like he was wearing shades.

One complaint I have about his robot mode is that his articulation is not very good.

- His head has very good articulation. Left, right, up and down movement.
- His shoulders are the weak part. They rotate 360 degrees but the outward movement only moves one click on its ratchet joint.
- Elbows bend slightly less than 90 degrees and there is a bicep swivel.
- There is wrist articulation.
- His three bottom fingers out but are still in the curled position. His index finger opens independently but is also fixed in the curled position.
- There is no waist articulation.
- His legs move forward slightly less than 90 degrees and back about 45 degrees. They move out to the side about 45 degrees.
- He has heavy ratchet knee joints that bend about 90 degrees.
- He has an ankle tilt.

One other thing that I'm not a big fan of is that his legs are not very detailed so it looks kind of unfinished to me. Other things of note are that he has die-cast in his feet and that he has rubber tires. He has some sprue marks... scars? Some people might have an issue with that. It doesn't look too bad to me.

Besides his gun, he comes with a Spike and Daniel figure. As with previous human figures, their faces are unpainted.

I don't know why they gave Daniel a girl's body. Maybe it's because in most Japanese anime, the boys look like girls?

They only have about enough articulation to sit in Ultra Magnus' cab.

He also comes with an extra pair of fists that will allow him to hold MP-10's Matrix and an alternative screaming face that will allow you to re-create this scene from Transformers: The Movie. The fists are on ball joints, so to switch the fists, you just pull them out.

I bought mine from RobotKingdom.com and it came with a collector coin.

He's a bit tall compared to Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime compared to the TV show but I think it was the TV show that got it wrong. It doesn't make sense for him to be the same height and Optimus and Rodimus when his entire trailer is apart of his robot mode.

Here's him compared to MP Grimlock with Fans Toys' heels attached and Fans Toys' Scoria (aka Slag). I don't like it that he's taller than the Dinobots.

Here's him compared to his G1 self.

I like his transformation. There's no really frustrating part for me. If you do everything properly, it's a pretty straight forward transformation.

His vehicle mode is very G1 accurate. It looks good to me. The only complaint I have is that you can clearly see his thighs. I thought maybe they could have covered that up by having a flip panel from his lower legs or something. And it's not extremely noticeable with the trailer attached but he has visible head syndrome. The missiles in vehicle mode can attach to the sides or to the front like the G1 toy.

His gun stores in vehicle mode in between the top section of his trailer.

His cab does detach from the trailer. There's a switch on the bottom that you need to press to release it, otherwise, it's attached pretty solidly.

His cab can turn but there are some clearance issues with the back wheels.

This figure is the only Masterpiece figure that I know of where a third party company has released a figure of the same character. The third party figure is KFC's Citizen Stack. I don't have this figure but from pictures I've seen, I prefer the MP-22. I'm partial to cartoon accuracy and Citizen Stack just doesn't do it for me.

Overall, I really like this figure. However, it's kind of an expensive figure. If you're not a big fan of Ultra Magnus, I can't say I would recommend this figure because of the price for what you get for it. If you can afford it, it's a really nice figure to add to a Masterpiece collection.
