Sometimes you might want to add a second condition to a left outer join. This is pretty straight forward if you know how to do SQL queries. However, Oracle has a short hand notation in which you can use the (+), which is not so straight forward.

I have an Android phone and I noticed that I had an option to use Google Voice as my voicemail service. So, I decided to try it out. The program tried to connect but failed. I found out that the service is only available in the US. Another, more disturbing, thing that I found out was that Google had secretly sent an SMS each time it tried to connect to its service. The number it texted was 17605370537, which I only found on my messaging usage logs. I am writing this blog to warn people because I currently don't know how to complain to Google about this.

Since my blog about my old modem was so popular, I've decided to write a tutorial on how to set my new modem in modem mode only. The setup for this is relatively easy, though, compared to my previous modem.

Once upon a time, I wrote this blog that showed how you could select distinct based on a single column, while at the same time select other fields from the table.

Looking back on that blog, I didn't really explain why you would need something like this and that example wasn't really a good one since in most situations, the reason you would need this is on a one-to-many or many-to-many relationship.

Going back to that example, I would change company to resident and this would have been a more useful query:

select, r.fname, r.lname from resident r inner join address a on order by a.move_in_date;

In this example, we're storing a history of a resident's address and the above query would get a history of their address ordered by the move-in date. But suppose you only wanted the current address.

In MySQL, you could actually do this:

select, r.fname, r.lname, max(a.move_in_date) from resident r inner join address a on group by order by a.move_in_date;

This is not something you can do in Oracle. In Oracle, you would need to do a sub-query:

select, r.fname, r.lname, a.move_in_date
from resident r, address a
and a.move_in_date=(select max(a2.move_in_date) from address a2, resident r2 where and;

What this query is doing is it's getting all the addresses for resident r. Then, it also requires that the address move_in_date is equal to the max move_in_date of the resident (

A few months ago I switch over to Flash CS4 using AS3 and it was completely different from what I had been using before (Flash MX using AS2). I've decide to write some mini tutorials just for my own reference and maybe it will help someone else out. First, here's a tutorial for how to use sound.

OK, perhaps this isn't the best analogy. If you don't know who Steve Fonyo is, my friend Flocons recently wrote a blog about him. In short, he lost his leg to cancer, like Terry Fox, and attempted a similar run across Canada. He, however, was able to complete his marathon, yet got little recognition for it. If you want to learn more about Steve Fonyo, you should read my friend's blog.

What does this have to do with the Opera browser? Very little, other than that, I don't think Opera gets enough recognition for its accomplishments.

How can you stop someone from framing your site? First of all, what does that mean? If you don't know what it means, you probably won't care about this blog but I'll give a little explanation, anyway. You know when you do a Google image search and when you click on the images, it takes you to the site but there is a bar at the top of their site with Google's information? Well, that's Google framing the original site. They put the site in what's called a frame in HTML. Here's a little javascript code to break out of frames. Just put this code in the onLoad attribute of the body tag.
if (self != top) top.location.href = self.location.href;

Recently, I did an upgrade from phpBB3 version 3.0.0 to 3.0.5. I noticed that there was an error when people were signing up. This was the error message I got in the phpBB error logs.

[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/functions_messenger.php on line 446: mail() [function.mail]: Bad parameters to mail() function, mail not sent.

I had determined that the error came from the mail_encode function from line 446 in the /includes/functions_messenger.php file. My temporary solution was to remove that function. I will look into it further to see if I can find a proper fix for it.
