You may have noticed that Microsoft has included a new version of Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 8 ) in one of its recent updates. Here's what Microsoft as to say about some of the new features of IE8.

The question is, should you install it? Unless you are eagerly looking forward to the new features of this update, I would recommend that you not install it just yet. As it is still fairly new, it may contain some bugs.

I've been disappointed in Filezilla 3 ever since it was released. The reason being that it eliminated many good features which were in Filezilla 2. Filezilla 2 was very friendly to web developers whereas Filezilla 3 seems to want to alienate us. As a web developer, I often want to be able to have access to edit a file from the FTP client so that I don't have to keep switching between Windows Explorer and the FTP client in order to edit and upload files.

My computer has been acting up a bit so I scanned it for rootkits. In simple terms, a rootkit is more powerful type of virus that hides itself from the operating system. Because of this, you cannot simply find the file in Windows Explorer and delete it. Anyway, after scanning my computer with AVG Anti-Virus (paid version), I found that it had found a rootkit in C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\abqxvy3m.SYS. So, I removed it and restarted my computer. I then did another scan to make sure it was gone. AVG then found another rootkit in the same folder but with a different, equally random looking name. Doing a Google search, I was able to find a site that claims that CD drive emulation tools, Alcohol and Daemon Tools, install rootkits to hide themselves from DRM tools. I couldn't find any official documentation to back this claim but I did observe that after I uninstalled Alcohol 52%, the "rootkit" was no long found and return when I reinstalled the software. You can scan your computer for rootkits with free software such as Rootkit Revealer (does not remove) or AVG Anti-Rootkit. AVG Anti-Rootkit is no longer supported but it can remove the rootkits that it finds.

It looks like YouTube has upgraded to widescreen format. On some videos, there is a link at the bottom right of the video that lets you watch the video in high quality. If you have a YouTube account, you can set this to be the default. I had trouble finding the setting so I thought I'd do a little tutorial to help people find the setting. Once you are logged in, click on the Account link at the top. Then, on the side navigation, click on 'Playback setup'. Here, you can select the type of video quality playback you want. Choose 'I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it's available,' for high quality videos.

- Download the FREE RealPlayer here : Click on the "Free Download" button on the right. Do not let them trick you into buying it. Unless you really want to.

- Once you install the program, you can open a URL within RealPlayer. Go to File -> Open, then just enter in your URL (link).

- Right-click on the video and there should be and option to download the video to RealPlayer.

- If you don't know where your file downloaded to, go to Tools -> Preferences -> Download & Recording. There will be a box that says, Save Files. That's where your files are being saved.

- Your files will be in .flv format. You might want to convert this to an avi file. I'm not sure if this will work for everybody but you can download a program called RAD Video Tools

- Once you have installed the program, open it. In the "Files of type" box, select "All files (*.*)" Browse for your .flv file and select it. Then click "Convert a file"

- Rename your file to a .avi file. Check off "Convert Video" and "Convert Audio". Leave everything blank and click "Convert". It will ask you for a "Video Conversion." Select Xvid or divX, if you have those. If you do not, you need to install one of those codecs first.

The charset for the responseText for Ajax seems to be set to UTF-8 by default. If you need to change the responseText character set, you need to use the following code:

xmlhttp.overrideMimeType('text/xml; charset=iso-8859-1');

EDIT: I've discovered that this does not work in IE. So for now, I will have to convert all AJax content to UTF-8.

MySQL has pretty flexible syntax compared to MS SQL. In MySQL, you can do joins in two ways but lately I've been using the MS SQL way so that the code would be more easy to convert over, if necessary.
